Registration is open for this trail run and event to benefit the Carolina Thread Trail, our regional trail network
Who: The Carolina Thread Trail, known as The Thread, is a 15-county, two state initiative designed to inspire and facilitate the creation and development of a regional network of trails, blueways and conservation corridors that would link more than 2.3 million citizens. The 15-county region includes Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties within North Carolina and Cherokee, Chester, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina.
What: The Thread is sponsoring a trail race and after-event called Tread The Thread 5K & 10K to benefit the organization’s efforts to provide a regional network of trails and blueways. Registration is open for the race. Those interested in registering to run can do so at RacesOnline(http://www.racesonline.com/
When: Saturday, May 3, 2014, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Where: Buffalo Creek Preserve and Trail in Mt. Pleasant, NC – 7911 Malibu Road. Signs will be in place directing attendees to parking and to the start of the race. The race will take place on a new segment of The Thread on a 390 acre conserved property managed by the Catawba Lands Conservancy, The Thread’s lead agency. The property includes a restored oak savannah, active farmland of hay and soybeans and forest bluffs along Adam’s Creek.
Cost: The cost to participate is $25 for the 5K and 10K and race day registration costs will be $30.
Why: Trails offer many community benefits – including promoting and supporting healthy lifestyles, tourism, economic development initiatives – which all add to the quality of life in our region. Currently, 137 miles of The Thread are open to the public for walking, biking, hiking, paddling and enjoying. New trails are under development along 14 active corridors. The Thread is a community effort with a cross section of companies and businesses throughout the region supporting trail building efforts.
A fun and festive post-race atmosphere will include live bluegrass music by West End String Band and sponsor booths. Charlotte based brewery, Bridsong Brewery, will provide the event’s beer and a local barbeque caterer will provide the food. Racers will receive an event shirt, one beer and lunch plate.
Media/Photo Opportunities: The media is invited to cover this event and can interview runners and participates. Interviews can be arranged with The Thread’s Project Director, Karl Froelich. The race and festivities are scheduled to conclude at 12:00 p.m.
Directions to the Buffalo Creek Preserve (from Charlotte Take NC-49 North to State Road 2411/Cold Springs Road and turn right. Turn left at Mt. Pleasant Road South. Turn right onto Malibu Road.
About The Carolina Thread Trail The Carolina Thread Trail (The Thread) is a 15-county, two state initiative designed to inspire and facilitate the creation and development of a regional network of trails, blueways and conservation corridors that would link more than 2.3 million citizens. With technical resources and catalytic funding from The Thread, local communities are planning and implementing their portions of this greenway-interstate system. The 15-county region includes Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties within North Carolina and Cherokee, Chester, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina. Catawba Lands Conservancy is the lead agency for The Thread, which is working in partnership with Foundation For The Carolinas and many local partners.
